About Xfinity Gateways
Comcast's XB-series gateways are modem and router in one box, and they're managed differently from any retail router: the Xfinity app is the primary control surface, and the classic 10.0.0.1 browser panel is a secondary tool that Comcast has been quietly stripping down for years. Expect the unexpected split, some settings live only in the app, a few only in the browser panel, and a couple (like DNS servers) can't be changed anywhere at all.
The gateway also broadcasts a public "xfinitywifi" hotspot for other Comcast customers by default. It's isolated from your home network and capped, but if the idea bothers you it can be turned off in your Xfinity account settings, not in the gateway panel.

Connect your device via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable to the Xfinity/Comcast router.
Navigate to http://10.0.0.1 in a browser.

Troubleshooting
Browser access must be enabled first. Open Xfinity app → Wi-Fi → View Equipment → Advanced Settings → Admin Tool → toggle ON. Then retry 10.0.0.1.
In Xfinity app go to Gateway Settings → Reset Admin Password to restore the default.
Not missing, moved. Comcast relocated port forwarding into the Xfinity app (WiFi → View WiFi equipment → Advanced settings → Port forwarding). The browser panel shows the section on some firmware but edits made there don't stick. Set a reserved IP for the target device first or the forward will break when the address changes.
What Lives Where: App vs Browser Panel
This split causes most of the confusion with these gateways, so here's the honest map. In the app: Wi-Fi name and password, port forwarding, parental controls (xFi profiles), pausing devices, and the admin-panel access toggle. In the browser panel at 10.0.0.1: bridge mode, firewall level, DMZ, connected-devices detail, and DOCSIS signal diagnostics under Connection. Nowhere: custom DNS servers. Comcast locks DNS to their own resolvers on the gateway, full stop. If you want Cloudflare or Pi-hole DNS network-wide, hand out DNS via your own router in bridge mode, or set DNS per device.
If you find yourself fighting this arrangement regularly, the structural fix is bridge mode plus your own router, at which point the gateway becomes a dumb modem and every setting is yours. The alternative a lot of Comcast customers eventually take: buy your own DOCSIS modem outright and return the gateway, which also removes the monthly equipment fee from the bill. Check Comcast's approved-modems list before buying.

FAQ
What if admin/password does not work?
If browser access was already enabled and the default still fails, someone changed the panel password. Reset it from the Xfinity app (Gateway Settings → Reset Admin Password) rather than factory-resetting the whole gateway; a full reset also wipes your Wi-Fi name and takes the unit through reactivation, which is ten minutes of your life you won't get back.
Is bridge mode or IP Passthrough better with my own router?
Bridge mode is the cleaner cut: the gateway stops routing entirely and your router gets the public IP. You lose xFi features and the panel goes mostly dormant, which is usually exactly what you wanted. IP Passthrough keeps some gateway features alive while still handing your router a public IP, useful if someone in the house actually uses xFi parental controls. When in doubt, bridge mode, fewer moving parts.
Why does my gateway reboot itself at night?
Comcast pushes firmware and config updates on their schedule, not yours, and the gateway reboots to apply them. There's no user-facing toggle for it. If a 3 am reboot interrupts something important regularly, that's another argument for your own modem and router.
