Logging In to Comcast Arris Gateways

XB6, XB7, XB8 owners: Comcast disabled the web admin panel by default. Enable it first: Xfinity App > Wi-Fi > View Wi-Fi Equipment > Advanced Settings > Admin Tool Online Access > toggle ON. Then try 10.0.0.1.

1
Enable browser access for XB6/XB7/XB8

Open the Xfinity app → Wi-Fi → View Equipment → Advanced Settings → Admin Tool Online Access → toggle ON. Wait 30 seconds. Skip this for non-Xfinity Arris modems.

2
Connect and open http://10.0.0.1

Connect to the Xfinity gateway via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Open a browser and go to http://10.0.0.1.

3
Log in with admin / password

Username: admin. Password: password. If the password was changed, reset it via Xfinity app → Gateway Settings → Reset Admin Password.

4
Access bridge mode if needed

Go to Gateway → At a Glance → Enable Bridge Mode to eliminate double-NAT and pass your public IP to your own router.

How to Log In

Xfinity XB6/XB7/XB8 gateways block browser access by default. You must enable it first in the Xfinity app before 10.0.0.1 will respond.

1
Enable browser access (XB6/XB7/XB8 only)

Open the Xfinity app → Wi-Fi → View Equipment → Advanced Settings → Admin Tool Online Access → toggle ON. Wait 30 seconds.

2
Connect and open 10.0.0.1

Connect to the Xfinity gateway via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Open a browser and navigate to http://10.0.0.1.

3
Login: admin / password

Username: admin. Password: password. If the password was changed, go to Xfinity app → Gateway Settings → Reset Admin Password to restore the default.

IP Passthrough (Bridge Mode)

If you have a separate router behind the Arris gateway, you likely have double-NAT. IP Passthrough removes the gateway's NAT and passes the public IP to your router, improving gaming and remote access.

1
Log in at http://10.0.0.1

with admin credentials.

2
Step 2

Go to Gateway > Connection > IP Passthrough.

3
Step 3

Set Allocation Mode to DHCPS-fixed.

4
Select your router from the connected devices list

(shown by MAC address or hostname).

5
Click Save.

The gateway reboots and passes the public IP directly to your router.

Troubleshooting

1
10.0.0.1 rejected on XB6/XB7/XB8

Enable the admin tool in the Xfinity App first. Go to Wi-Fi > View Wi-Fi Equipment > Advanced Settings > Admin Tool Online Access and toggle it on.

2
Credentials rejected despite correct defaults

Look for a separate "Admin Password" on the gateway label - it differs from the Wi-Fi password. If you changed it and forgot it, hold the reset button 30 seconds to restore factory defaults.

3
SURFboard shows zero signal levels

The modem has not yet registered with the ISP. Wait 3 to 5 minutes for the DOCSIS registration process. If levels stay at zero, check all coax cable connections and contact Comcast to re-provision the modem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy a SURFboard instead of renting from Comcast?

For most people, buying pays off in under a year. Comcast charges around $14 per month to rent their gateway. An Arris SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 modem costs about $100 to $120 and you own it outright. You also get full unrestricted admin access at 192.168.100.1 without ISP limitations. Check Comcast's approved modem list before purchasing to confirm compatibility with your service tier.

What do the T3 errors in the SURFboard event log mean?

T3 timeout errors mean the modem sent an upstream ranging request and received no response from your ISP's head-end equipment. Common causes include high upstream noise, damaged coaxial cable, corroded connectors, or a failing splitter in your home wiring. Check all coax connections, remove unnecessary splitters, and call your ISP for a line check if T3 errors are accumulating rapidly.
