Router Buying Guide 2025

Wi-Fi 7 routers are now available alongside Wi-Fi 6E. Here is what actually matters when choosing a router for your specific situation.

Wi-Fi Standards Explained

StandardNameMax SpeedBuy in 2025?
802.11axWi-Fi 69.6 Gbps (theoretical)Yes — still excellent value
802.11ax (6 GHz)Wi-Fi 6E9.6 Gbps + 6 GHz bandYes — best midrange choice
802.11beWi-Fi 746 Gbps (theoretical)For future-proofing, premium price
802.11acWi-Fi 53.5 Gbps (theoretical)Only if budget is very tight

Theoretical maximums are never achieved in real homes. A Wi-Fi 6 router in a real home typically delivers 400-900 Mbps per device in good conditions. For most households with a 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps internet plan, Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E is entirely sufficient.

What Actually Matters

Coverage Area

A single router covers 1,500-2,500 sq ft adequately. For larger homes, consider a mesh system (2-3 nodes) rather than a more expensive single router.

Gaming and Latency

Gaming does not require a gaming-branded router. Any Wi-Fi 6 router with QoS delivers excellent latency. Wired Ethernet is always better than Wi-Fi for serious gaming.

Security Features

Look for regular firmware updates, WPA3 support, and SPI firewall. Asus AiProtection (free, lifetime) and Netgear Armor (subscription) add network-level threat detection.

Admin Interface

A good admin panel matters for advanced users. Asus ASUSWRT is the gold standard for features. TP-Link and Netgear are good. Mesh systems (Google, Eero) trade advanced features for simplicity.
