About TP-Link Deco
Deco is TP-Link's mesh family, and it's an app-first system: initial setup happens in the Deco app over Bluetooth, tied to a TP-Link ID account, and that app remains the main way you manage the network. This catches people who owned an Archer router before, same company, completely different philosophy. There's no admin/admin here and no full-featured web panel.
What exists on the web side is a limited status interface: with a browser on the Deco network, tplinkdeco.net or 192.168.68.1 opens a page where you sign in with your TP-Link ID password (the owner account's, specifically). Depending on model and firmware it shows connected clients, internet status and a handful of settings, but the real controls, port forwarding included, live in the app.

Getting Into a Deco System
Open the Deco app on the phone that set the system up (or any phone signed into the same TP-Link ID, or added as a manager). Everything from Wi-Fi password to firmware updates is here.
From a device on the Deco network, browse to tplinkdeco.net or http://192.168.68.1. Sign in with the TP-Link ID password of the owner account. Useful when your phone is dead or you just want a quick client list on a big screen.
A used Deco stays bound to the previous owner's TP-Link ID until reset (pin-hole button until the LED pulses red, then starts over in the app). You cannot adopt someone else's bound unit, which is annoying at a garage sale and reassuring if yours ever gets stolen.

Troubleshooting
Enable Bluetooth, stand within 3m of node. Or use manual setup option in app.
Deco M4/M5 (dual-band) split 5 GHz for backhaul. Use Ethernet backhaul or upgrade to tri-band XE/BE model.
Deco app → More → Advanced → Port Forwarding. Set a DHCP reservation for the target device first (Address Reservation, same Advanced menu), otherwise the rule dies the next time the device changes IP. Note this whole menu disappears if the Deco runs in access point mode, forwarding is the router's job then.
Behind an ISP gateway that also routes, Decos in router mode create double-NAT. Either switch the Deco system to access point mode (More → Advanced → Operating Mode) and accept losing Deco's routing features, or put the ISP box in bridge mode and let Deco route. Both work; running two routers stacked is the only wrong option.
Ethernet Backhaul: The Free Upgrade
Every Deco supports wired backhaul, and it's automatic: run an Ethernet cable between two Deco units (directly or through a switch) and they use it instead of the air. No setting to flip. On the dual-band models like M4 and M5, where wireless backhaul and your devices share the same 5 GHz radio, cabling even one distant node transforms the whole system's performance. If a cable run is at all possible in your home, do it, the cheapest Deco kit with wired backhaul beats a much more expensive one without.

Do I need the HomeShield subscription?
No. The free tier covers what most homes use: basic parental controls, QoS and network scans. The paid tier adds fancier reports, more granular controls and IoT protection. The app pitches the upgrade often enough that it feels mandatory, it isn't.
Does Deco work when the internet is down?
The Wi-Fi keeps running locally, but note the app manages the system via TP-Link's cloud, so remote management needs internet and even local app control can get flaky offline. The web view at 192.168.68.1 still answers locally, one more reason it's good to know it exists.
Can I mix Deco models?
Yes, nearly all Deco models mesh together, which is one of the line's genuine strengths. The system runs at the capability of whichever unit handles a given link, so put the newest, fastest unit as the main Deco connected to your modem.
Which unit is the "main" Deco and does it matter?
The one wired to your modem acts as the router; the rest become satellites. It matters for performance (fastest model there) and for stability, if the main unit loses power, the satellites can't route internet for anyone. Put it somewhere central with decent ventilation, not buried behind the TV.
